Our Musical Director

 Garry Clark



Garry Clark brings an abundance of conducting, performing and teaching experience to his leadership of Blue Mountains Concert Band. His musical history with the Blue Mountains began in 1998 when he was musical director of the Mountains Wind Ensemble. He currently conducts both Blue Mountains Concert Band and Mountains Youth Band, and occasionally performs with Blue Mountains Jazz Ensemble. Garry led Mountains Youth Band to successive National Band Championship wins in 2009 and 2010. 

Garry graduated from high school with strong performance credentials and spent the next five years playing clarinet with the Royal Australian Air Force Command Band. He studied clarinet with Graeme Chapman (Sydney), Mark Walton (Sydney Conservatorium) and Terence Stirzaker (Australian Opera & Ballet Orchestra). Garry has a Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Teaching degree from the University of New England.

Garry's instrumental skills have taken him to the highest levels of success in state and national competition. He has performed with the Australian Wind Orchestra and the Sydney Wind Orchestra. He has toured with these groups throughout Australia and the USA, and performed in New York's Carnegie Hall and at the Mid-West Band and Orchestra Conference. Garry currently leads the saxophone section of the City of Sydney Wind Ensemble.

Garry is committed to the development of instrumental music at a community level and to providing opportunities for community engagement with the arts. He performs regularly with The Occasional Performing Sinfonia (TOPS) and with various ensembles, orchestras, musical societies and concert bands across Sydney. In addition to his leadership with Blue Mountains Concert Band, Garry is Musical Director of Hills Music Academy, and Director of Bands at Crestwood Public School, Matthew Pearce Public School and Kings Langley Public School.

Garry is a member of the Australian Band & Orchestra Director's Association, and has previously served as NSW and National President. He is a past member of the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, and Board Member of the Asia and Pacific Band Director's Association. Garry is a highly regarded musical director and has frequently been Staff Associate Conductor and Manager for the Jerry Nowak Conducting Summer School since 1995, and has presented lectures in conducting for the Australian Society of Music Educators.

  Garry is a regular contributor to the advisory boards for some of Sydney’s most prestigious music festivals and eisteddfods. He is one of the founding members of the NSW School Band Festival (SBF) Advisory panel and has adjudicated at the SBF over the past few years. At the 2010 NSW Annual School Band Festival, Garry was awarded the ABODA Conductor’s Award for the musical director who prepared and presented the most challenging, professional and entertaining program.
