About Mountains Youth Band

Mountains Youth Band was launched at a Band Enrichment Day in August 2002. The band is a division of Blue Mountains Concert Band Inc (established 1982) and operates under the established constitution and operating practices of that band.

Aims

1. Search for Musical Excellence

Mountains Youth Band aims to provide a quality Concert Band experience for talented and enthusiastic young musicians through the development of sound instrumental and performance skills in a structured, friendly, co-operative and non-threatening environment. The band also aims to provide quality performance and competition opportunities for its members. This is a ‘personal bests’ band where each member is encouraged to do their best at all times and to seek the continuing improvement of their individual and ensemble skills.

2. Voluntary Service

Mountains Youth Band aims to serve the community through performance at civic and other community events. Many events such as Australia Day Ceremonies, Anzac Commemorations, Fetes and Town Fairs are enhanced by the band’s contribution. The band believes that the exercise of voluntary service embodies many of the qualities which define the Australian character.

3. Teamwork

Mountains Youth Band aims to produce musical output which reflects a powerful sense of corporate teamwork. That is, where each individual instrumentalist contributes so the band presents itself musically, not as an ensemble of individuals, but as one body. Teamwork is the fuel which allows individuals to achieve at levels they could not hope to individually.

4. Leadership Formation

Mountains Youth Band aims to promote leadership opportunities for its members. This may be through the leadership of a section of the band or through training for a specific role. The future of the band relies heavily upon its role to prepare aspiring members to roles of leadership and responsibility. Youth members who have undertaken roles of responsibility will also be advantaged into areas of adult musical experience.

5. Purposeful Recreation

Mountains Youth Band aims to provide a vehicle for purposeful rather than wasteful recreation. It is hoped the members will sense the value of their musical recreation and continue it long after their direct association with the band. Purposeful recreation fosters friendship and co-operation, creating an environment where personal and corporate growth can take place.

Achievements

Mountains Youth Band has achieved many milestones.

Soon after its formation, Mountains Youth Band performed at civic events such as the Springwood Foundation Day, The Leura Gardens Festival, The World Environment Festival and The Glenbrook Village Fair. The band also contributes to the community by playing at three Anzac commemoration ceremonies each year. In 2004 the band performed its first Gala Mayoral Concert in the presence of the mayor of the Blue Mountains in Katoomba. The band has also performed at Panthers World of Entertainment in Penrith and at the Mamre Homestead at St Marys. Beyond western Sydney, the band has also performed at Sydney’s Darling Harbour during the Sydney Motor Show.

In 2007, under the baton of new Musical Director, Garry Clark, Mountains Youth Band was awarded First Place in three important contests, namely, the Open Division of the Bathurst Eisteddfod, the Open Division of the Hawkesbury Eisteddfod, and the NSW State Concert Band Championships Junior C Division. In the same year, the band also performed its first “Holiday Celebration Concert” at the Q Theatre, Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre, Penrith. In 2009, Mountains Youth Band achieved national recognition when it was awarded Champion Band at the Australian National Concert Band Championships Junior C Division. These successes established Mountains Youth Band as the premier youth concert band in Sydney’s western region.

The band maintains a busy training, performance and competition schedule. Individual members are also encouraged to compete in individual solo competition.
